Horn Spoon

Item's Choctaw Name:  Lvpish Ishtimpa

 

Item's English Name: Horn Spoon

 

Age:  ca.1800

 

Material: Clay, Buffalo Horn

 

 

Origin: This spoon belonged to Hopia Iskitima, who carried it through the War of 1812.  It was brought to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears by his descendants.

 

Current Owner: Oklahoma Historical Society  (#2500). 

 

Location: Oklahoma History Center, Oklahoma City

Notes - This rare, early spoon was a personal possession of a Choctaw warrior.  It is made from the outer covering a buffalo horn, which must have been obtained either in trade, or by Choctaw hunters who traveled west of Choctaw country.  The spoon has no modern tool marks on it.
