MissionTo assist the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma community in preserving its living heritage, through protecting sacred sites and historic sites and through aiding community efforts to maintain and revitalize Choctaw traditional culture. The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma is officially recognized by the United States federal government through a series of treaties extending back to 1786. In 2002, the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Park Service, allowing the Choctaw Nation to take on the duties of the State Historic Preservation Officer on Choctaw Tribal Trust lands. ProgramsThe Department has established specific programs in order to achieve this mission. These programs include: NHPA Section 106, Tribal Archaeology, Cultural GIS, NAGPRA, Cemetery Restoration, Community Engagement & Outreach, Architectual History, and Growing Hope Program.
