Mortor & Pestle

Item's Choctaw Name:  Kiti

 

Item's English Name:  Mortar

 

Age: Early 1900's

 

Material: unknown hardwood

 

Dimensions:

 

L= 73 cm

Max width of top= 25.5 cm

Max width of hole =17.0 cm

Average rim thickness = 3.9 cm

Notes: Rough-cut with a saw on top.  Inner bark of tree still adhering on exterior.  The interior of the hole shows heavy wear, obliterating tool marks.  Trunk is made from twisted hardwood.  Type is unknown.  It appears to have darker heartwood.

L = 111.5 cm

L of square part = 33.6 cm

Average width of handle = 3.5 cm

Notes: Tool marls are not obvious other than saw cuts and shaving marks, possibly for a drawknife.  It is made from a split piece of light-colored hardwood.  It is very heavy.  The handle is weathered, but still shows some polich from use.
